Dec 26, Frosty Our Angel

by Kathy Radacky
(Williston, Florida USA)

FROSTY

FROSTY

FROSTY

Frosty came into our life about a month after we lost our 16 year old Grandson Jay in a tragic auto accident on June 15, 2010.

A good friend of his contacted us about having kittens to give away. Was not sure we wanting one but she brought her up to look at and we fell in love with her. a fitting name for her was Frosty. She was 8 months old on Christmas day. She has been a god sent. It has given me a reason to get up .

She ride to work with me on a gold cart everyday and if not she will chase the golf cart like a dog. We have customer who come by our shop just to visit with her. We also have Rhonda Island Red laying hens that she keeps in line. It is so cute to watch her chase them but not catch them which she really doesn't want to do.

I believe she was a angel sent from above at a time we needed one. I hope she will be a part of our family for a long long time.

Nov 24, Elle and Emma in the morning sun

Hi Eric,

Ah your two young ladies are gorgeous.

Their coloring is very much like my daughter-in-law's cat Marble. I love those rich warm shades.

Congratulations Eric, you have two lovely cats, whether the morning sun is out or not, thank you for sharing them with us.

Dec 11, "The Duchess"

by K Warn
(NY)

I moved into an apartment by myself this year and decided I wanted to get some sort of pet just not a dog. I almost got a parakeet but I like 'the Duchess' much better. I had told my friends and family I wanted a pet when someone told me they found a litter of 10 week old kitten in their backyard and I could have one.

I took the Duchess home and did a little research. She was actually around four weeks old and had fleas all over her. I gave her a bathed her everyday and picked off the fleas until they were all gone.

My research told me my little kitty wasn't old enough for traditional flea treatment. After a vet check and a clean bill of health (thanks to my free de-flea job prior to visiting the vet ;)she was all set to be happy in my home.

But - she wasn't. The little girl was terrified of everything. At first I accounted it to her being feral but, I now believe she was just so young and I didn't know that until a few weeks after. After about a month of intensely hard taming she became friendly and comfortable with me. But when visitors would come and she would dart under the couch for the entire time they stayed. I continued my research intent on bonding with my cat and making this work.

I figured out that she is some kind of mix of an egyptian mau (maybe a domestic short hair because she is white with tabby spots.)Although I've read the mau is rare, the more I read about the breed the more I conclude she is. She has little dots in her tabby spots. I noticed from day one that they were not striped like all other tabbies I've seen. When I first got her she had blue eyes and with in 2 to 3 weeks she developed amber eyes but she still has a blue-green ring between her pupil and her amber color.

Like a egytian mau she is also very shy when I began reading this and about the cats loyalty to their owner I was thrilled! So optimistic that with time my kitty would love me which is all I wanted. Now almost 2 months after I first got 'the Duchess' she is my best friend.

She sleeps with me from midnight until when ever I wake up and for a college student that could be any where from 8 or 12 am. But 'the Duchess' has slept until 2 in the afternoon with me as long as I feed her her breakfast in the morning. If I don't go to sleep with her by 1 am though, she will be passed out in bed waiting for me. She is also super playful and I love how although it seems like she's trying to hurt me when she play fights she's really not.

I've had enough dogs to know puppies control their bites when they play-fight with you but they won't bite as hard as they can. I've noticed 'the Duchess' controls her bites too when shes wrestling my hand and I'm giving her tummy tickles.

At first I was worried 'the Duchess' was feral and shy because she didn't like it in my apartment with me. Then I found out that's just the kind of cat she is and thats ok. She makes it perfectly obvious to me that she wouldn't want to be any where else. And that's why I know I chose the right cat.

Dec 9, Help! My cat attacks my feet at night.

?Help! My cat attacks my feet at night!?

It's a common problem. Talk to other folks who share their home with a cat and you will hear many tales of pet kitties launching an attack on their humans feet when the human goes to bed.

It's as though cats see the lumps made by feet under the bed covers as some sort of prey that has to be jumped on, scratched and bitten.

They are not all aggressive cats that do this but often cats that are normally very affectionate to their humans. It's just that those blanket mice are irresistible.

If you have this problem then you will want to end this behavior. Cats teeth and claws are s-h-a-r-p and they hurt!

So what can you do to stop your cat attacking your feet at night?

The obvious answer, the very obvious answer, has got to be stated.

Do not allow your cat in your bedroom at night.

There it has been said. And you have just answered in your head, or maybe out loud, the reason why your cat absolutely, no question about it, has to be in your bedroom at night.

I hear you. My cat is in my bedroom at night, and there are reasons for that, which I won't go into here.

But my cat does not attack my feet at night. (He has done, and there is every chance that he will play ?hunt the feet mice? again, but it's not a constant problem at the moment.)

You though, do have a problem. Your cat, who is normally loving and affectionate, morphs into a beast at night and assaults your feet. It's painful!

Still say that your cat absolutely, no question about it, has to be in your bedroom at night?

?Yes because that's where the litterbox is!?

Oh, OK, your cat has to have access to the litterbox 24/7 no mistake about that. Alright, here comes the obvious question ?Can you move the litterbox somewhere else??

Yes I know that you would not have the litter tray in your bedroom if it could be placed somewhere else. Sorry but I had to ask.

Moving a litterbox is no simple task anyway. Move it and your cat will likely not use it, and you don't want to swap the problem of kitty attacking your feet for the problem of kitty going anyplace but the litterbox.

You have to try moving the box bit by bit. Moving it by stealth sometimes works, note I said 'sometimes.' Another option is second litterbox. Site the second box so your feet attacking cat can use it at night when she or he is shut out of your bedroom. May take a little perseverance but you now will not be forced to have your feet scratched to pieces.

Alright, I hear what you say. There is nowhere to move the litter tray, or for a second one, your cat absolutely has to be in your bedroom.

You could try a couple of thick blankets on the lower part of your bed. Or a couple of pairs of thick fishermen's socks. Will not stop your cat from pouncing when the 'blanket mice' move, but should help to stop your poor feet from being scratched and bitten.

There is a snag to that solution though. It may help if you live someplace where it is chilly year round, but not so good in most places in the summer when all you want covering you at night is a thin sheet.

The good ol' squirt bottle. The squirt bottle gets recommended by many people who have suffered their cat scratching their feet at night. cat?s teeth image
Your cat's teeth are sharp, you do not want her biting your feet at night.

Cats, as you know, should never be punished for bad behavior. They do not associate their behavior with the punishment, they associate the punishment with you. But for many cats the squirt bottle works, possibly because it is remote. The spray of water hits them, and they don't like that, but you are standing a way off.

?Huh! I attacked these 'blanket mice' and suddenly I get splatted with water! It happens every time, maybe I should just leave them alone.?

Give it a try, it may work, plenty of folks say it does.

Possible snags with the squirt defense are: You end up with a wet bed, (and that hasn't happened in a long year!) Also, if you are anything like me, it is enough of a shock to be awoken at 2AM by my cat clawing and biting my smelly old feet (hey, maybe that's what attracts him, he does rather like cheese,) without having to fumble for the bedside light switch ? and try and focus my eyes, while still half asleep, to take aim with the squirt bottle. But . . . folks say it works.

Cats don't like the smell of citrus. Correction, some cats don't like the smell of citrus.

You could try spraying your duvet and blankets with lemon, lime or orange. If it works it will not only keep your cat from attacking your feet, but keep your cat off your bed at all times. Alternatively you could just spray your feet, in my case to have my tootsies smelling of lime would be a vast improvement.Unfortunately it is only some cats that are repelled by citrus. Whenever I peel an orange Mr Robin sits there and begs for a piece.

The tire them out technique. The theory is you have a playtime with your cat before you go to bed so he sleeps all night. Might work if your cat goes outside in the daytime and expends some energy climbing trees, chasing other cats and doing other cat things. But if your cat is a home alone all day kitty, he or she likely spends most of their day time snoozing. . . . then you are not likely to tire them out enough so they sleep all night.

A playtime for your cat is always a good thing though. Make it fun for both of you and remember that the idea is not to exhaust your kitty, just let them expend some energy.

It would be best not to have the play session just before you hit the sack. Your cat is just as likely to become excited by the playtime as he is to being tired. So if you go to bed right after, your cat won't be able to resist attacking those blanket mice.

Put a little time between playing and going to bed, that way your cat can settle down a bit. And when you do retire hopefully your cat will agree that it is time to snooze and leave your feet alone.

Of course if you have the time for another play session during the day, as well as the one before bedtime, that may work even better.

OK, so what worked with my cat? Well the worst attack of the feet was when he got under the bed covers. Man did that hurt! I awoke and let out a loud Ouch! (It might not have been ouch, but something less printable.) At the same time I must have jerked my leg to get my foot away from the scratching and biting beast.

It must have given Mr Robin a start. ?Oh, these blanket mice fight back!? he was only about twelve weeks, or so, old at the time. He has not got under the covers to attack my feet since. But that doesn't mean that he never will again though. He does sometimes still jump on the bumps that my feet make under the duvet, but I make a point of not moving my feet so the game is no fun. He soon gives up.

Occasionaly he stays on the bed and curls up, purring. When he stops purring I know that he has fallen asleep. Other times when he realizes that the blanket mice are not going to play he jumps off the bed and finds someplace else to sleep, anywhere but his basket of course. Either way I get to go to sleep without my feet being attacked.

However you do it, I hope that you succeed in stopping your cat attacking your feet. I know just how painful it is.

Please don't ever consider declawing your cat.

Dec 14, The cat with many names.

by jolyn
(pass christian, MS, US)

Kawasaki

Kawasaki

I have a cat named Kawasaki he wasn't always Kawasaki though. I found him under our old car after Katrina, he was stuck somehow and my dad got him out.

After we got him out we decided to keep him, my dad kept him in the trailer FEMA got us and Kawasaki stayed with him for 2 years until we moved to Pass Christian.

He started to stay in my room when we moved in, and then his name was Bobcat. The reason he has many names is cause my mom and me can never agree on a name, I named him Bobcat because he looked like a mini bobcat, or minx, but my mom called him Tigger for no reason at all. So my dad said he would change his name, he named him Harley.

When my dad got a Kawasaki motorcycle, and told me it was a japanese bike. Kawasaki started sleeping on the bike when it wasn't used, so i changed his name to Kawasaki, my mom didn't like it so she still calls him Tigger but me and my dd call him Kawasaki so he knows his REAL name.

Dec 4, Four cats that are happy inside

by Garry Wentworth.
(Grand Forks ND)

I have four very contented, fit and able, well adjusted happy indoor cats. I also have a couple of close neighbors who seem to think fit to tell me repeatedly how wrong I am to keep cats inside.

They are my cats. They get the best of care and have all they need. Yet I am accused of being cruel. These people do not get that I do not want my cats to end their days under the wheel of an auto or be ripped to pieces by a wild animal or be snatched and sold for research. I also do not want some cretin taking pot shots at them with an air soft. It happens that I also like wild birds and I don't want any cat of mine ripping them up.

For this I am selfish and cruel apparently.

One of my dear neighbors keeps parakeets. Does she think she is selfish and cruel by keeping them inside? No way, but apparently my cats are different to her precious birds.

Most of the time, Bates, Captain, Boop and Mary, have the run of the house. But they have their own room fitted out with two condos, scratchers, tunnels and a run of high shelving with balls and toys suspended above they love to swipe at. Their litter pans, one for each, are in their.

I have also constructed a outside run for them. They are only interested in venturing out in it when the sun is in the sky, otherwise they are not interested at all and after about two hours the most they trot back into the house. I'm out in the yard with them every time they are in the run.

Bates is the oldest, he is twelve years. He is the boss guy but rarely throws his weight around, he does not have to. I got him as a kitten and was going to name him Psycho but Bates serves just as good. He has a stare that makes you think he is going to rip out your heart. He keeps his place as boss guy just by using that stare. But he is as gentle a pussycat as can ever be. A happy and affectionate animal. Captain is a big shaggy ten years old tabby who looks like he should be in charge, but never says boo to a goose. He is content whatever happens.

As a kitten Boop's head and eyes were large, all kittens have big heads but hers stood out. So Betty Boop was the obvious choice of name for her, haven't used the Betty part in years. Her head still looks a little big but mainly because she has such a skinny body, not that she doesn't eat her share, just the way she is. Mary is Boop's sister. If anyone of them is going to be trouble it is Mary. She has mischief within her, but she is sweet just the same, as happy and cuddlesome as the rest of the gang. Boop and Mary are seven years now.

Vet bills no problem. All four are healthy and always have been. If they do need anything they get it, I am fortunate that I have been blessed so taking care of four cats is no problem at all. I am not thinking of increasing the gang, four happy creatures is fine. But if someone were to knock at my door with a kitten or cat that needed a home I can't say I would resist. But of course the newcomer would be an indoor cat, yes indeed.

My neighbors can have their opinions, I do wish they would keep their opinions to themselves, but I know my cats are as happy as they would be if left to roam about all day, and safer too.
